Look for a box, envelope or bag with a label like this, then take what you need from the kit. Please only take what you need and leave the rest for others. Email us if you find a kit that needs restocking.

Need help completing your hexagon or stitching your hexagons together? Check out our video tutorials on YouTube!
Instead of mailing in your work, if you want to contribute to the larger community quilt, we will host meetups throughout the season where you can get help with your sewing, drop off your finished pieces, or learn to finish your own. These events will also have special unique fabric colors to collect and add to your piece, so you’ll want to attend them all!!
Visit us at the following events to chat with us about the project and get a unique fabric for your project:
- Salt Springs 1st Annual SPRINGFEST: Saturday, June 6, noon-5pm
- Light A Candle for Literacy Festival: Saturday, June 13, noon – 4pm
- NOPL Brewerton: Wednesday August 26, 5 – 7pm

Little Free Fibrary is an interactive art project introducing people in Onondaga County to quilting arts. Introductory quilting kits containing instructions, information about quilting, and materials needed to create a simple quilt block are distributed throughout Onondaga County via the existing network of “Little Free Libraries”—sites for free book exchanges where anyone may take a book or bring a book to share. Many participants then share their work for inclusion with others’ blocks in a community quilt.

Easy! Just find one of the participating Little Free Libraries and visit it to collect materials, then stitch them together! If you want to contribute to the larger community quilt, we will host meetups throught the season where you can get help with your sewing, drop off your finished pieces, or learn to finish your own. Check this webpage or follow @littlefreefibrary on Instagram for details about these events.

Absolutely! This project was made with you in mind. Don’t be intimidated or discouraged because you haven’t done it–think of it as getting to try something new and learn a new skill. If you need more help, you can find video tutorials on YouTube here.
Your block will be sewn together with blocks submitted by others, and then turned into a larger community quilt! Quilting has a rich history of social and community practices, such as quilting bees where people (traditionally women) worked together to make and finish quilts, “round robin” projects where each quilter adds on to an existing design, or collaborations to raise money and visibility for social causes, such as women’s suffrage and AIDS awareness.
In 2024, kits for six different patchwork patterns were distributed between April – September. Fabrics and colors represented the area of the country where the kits were distributed (red=east, orange=north, yellow=northwest, green=west, blue=southwest/south, purple=southeast). We received 125 blocks from 34 different people, so many that we made two large quilts! The quilts were finished with stitching reflecting the silhouette of and areas within Onondaga County, with machine and hand stitched lines in proportion to the blocks we received, and colored yarn ties to represent the locations of the Little Free Libraries where kits were distributed. The completed quilts were displayed at Fayetteville Free Library from October-December 2025. Thank you to everyone who participated!

In 2025, our project focused on applique–a style of textile work in which pieces or patches of fabric in different shapes and patterns are sewn or stuck onto a larger piece to form a picture or design. The theme was “seasons” and so there were 4 distributions: Spring (April/May), Summer (June/July), Fall (August/Sept) and Winter (Oct/Nov). We received 62 applique blocks!
